How to Start my Own Blog for Free?
This is short a blog post answering the question ‘how to start my own blog for free’, in which I will answer the question, and I’ll also give you a bit of advice on changing your perception of what free really means.
Free is a word similar to unicorns and truthful politicians. It’s not really a thing, it’s make believe.
Buy one get one FREE – really means, “we have doubled the price and are trying to sell you two products at the same time at the same mark up.”
FREE bonus really means either “we’re giving away something which actually doesn’t cost us anything and we probably couldn’t actually sell as it has little or no real value.” or “we’ve added extra markup to the main product in order to allow us to pay for the bonus”.
There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch, we all know that!
So if you’re thinking about starting a ‘Free’ blog, just think about it for a minute, are you really wanting to start your own ‘worthless’ blog – or ‘earn profit for someone else’ blog? If course you’re not. But if it’s free, then why is it going to be of any value to you? What is in it for whoever is going to provide you with the hosting, which costs money, in order to provide you with a blog for free?
The reason that Blogger and WordPress.com (as opposed to wordpress.org which is the self hosted version of wordpress) and other free blogging platforms are free, is that you are giving the company who owns wordpress.com (Automattic, inc.) or whoever owns whatever company you’re thinking of going with, the right to run their ads on your content, therefore allowing them to profit on your content instead of you – and in addition there are paid hosting options on wordpress.com and others which remove the ads that they will show on your blog if you don’t upgrade.
If you apply, and if they let you in, then you may qualify for their wordAds system, which is their paid ads system, but even then it means you applying for the privilege of earning a % of what they’re earning from running ads on your content.
Why do you want to start your own blog?
If you’re wanting to start your own blog with a view to having a career as a blogger, meaning that one day you may earn a serious income from blogging, then you need to keep in mind that if you settle for a free blogging platform, you’re giving either some or all of your earning potential away. And for what? To save just a few dollars per month on hosting fees?
If you host with bluehost wordpress hosting, it will cost you a few dollars per month, and you can install wordpress for free and easy via wordpress.org, and this way you own your content 100% without having to give any percentage of your income to anyone else.
With all this said, if you do want to create a free blog, and you don’t care that this means you’re writing content for a third party to profit from, then each to their own ;-). You can sign up at wordpress.com for a free wordpress blog or at Blogger.com for a free blogger blog.
In addition, there is Tumblr, Medium, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, Ghost & Joomla.
